Swype is text entry for computer displays be it mobile or other. This was introduced at Techcrunch 50 and it looks like a game changer unless you look closely. I love technology like this because it brings me back to the days of graffiti on the Palm and the alternative methods introduced around that time. This swyping technique is not new though. Will it catch on now that the popularity of the iPhone opens the possibility for greater adoption. Here are some examples of these alternate text entry input software in the meantime.

The first one that comes to mind is MessagEase. I even got the overlay in the mail for my Palm device. The video demonstrates very well how this all works. There is a learning curve but a promise of speed once that hurdle has been jumped.

The other method of text entry I raved about at the time was Tengo. When I reviewed it, it was not compatible with the Palm TX but it did work with the Zire 72 and Windows Mobile devices. When I heard about Swype I went to you tube to check out their video. I found a pretty impressive thumbboard variation for Windows Mobile.

The following video demonstrates a stylus type pecking that yields very fast typing speeds the learning curve on this is very short. If you can get over the giddy nature of the girl who demos this you’ll see the amazing quick pecking she has mastered.

There are other text input methods similar to this I have not covered here. It will be interesting to see if this takes off.
